AI Assist and criticism

AI Assist adds open window detection (now AI-based), adaptive heating and preheating. According to heise, the heating pause remains subscription-only. Without the subscription, schedules and manual app control still work.

Hydraulic balancing and savings

tado offers a TÜV Rheinland-certified digital hydraulic balancing service (part of AI Assist) that may qualify for BAFA funding in Germany. An energy savings promise applies to every tado X purchase; check the conditions on tado's website. Real savings depend on how you heated before, insulation and how often you are away.

Alternatives

IKEA plans to bring its Matter radiator thermostat Liljebagge to Germany in January for about €15, according to heise. AVM Fritz!DECT, Homematic IP, Bosch and Eve are other options. Learn more about Matter in our smart home overview.

Installation and privacy

The wired version replaces your existing wall thermostat and connects to the existing wires; if you are unsure, ask a heating professional. The wireless version talks to a receiver at the boiler and can be placed more freely. The app guides you through rooms, schedules and target temperatures and can add the device to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa. Many tado features run in the cloud, but Matter allows local control via other systems if the internet goes down. Turn off location tracking if you do not need it.

Who should buy it?

tado X suits homes with heat pumps or underfloor heating and people who are often away. If you only need schedules, cheaper radiator thermostats may be enough. Simple rules also help: one degree less saves about six percent, and short, wide ventilation beats tilted windows. More in the Thermostats section.
