In short: Search engine optimisation matters more than ever in 2026, but it has become more demanding. Google's AI Overviews now reach more than 2.5 billion people a month, and AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users. There were also two core updates, several spam updates and new Search Console tools. Here is what changed, what GEO means and which basics still make the difference.
How AI is changing search
At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Overviews has more than 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode, a chat-like search experience, passed one billion monthly users just one year after launch. Queries in AI Mode have more than doubled every quarter. People ask longer, conversational questions and often get an answer directly on the results page. Google says it has added more inline links, website previews and Preferred Sources to these features.
What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: optimising content so AI answer engines such as AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity cite and link it. GEO builds on classic SEO rather than replacing it. Google's June 2026 guidance highlights unique, non-commodity content, clear structure, a good page experience and high-quality images and video. Agencies such as 444 SEO help with strategy, technical work and content.
Google updates in 2026
According to the Google Search Status Dashboard, 2026 so far brought a Discover update (5 February), the March core update (27 March to 8 April), the May core update (21 May to 2 June) and spam updates in March, June, August and September. Google advises sites affected by core updates to review content quality overall rather than chase quick fixes.
New in Search Console
Since June 2026, Search Console offers generative AI performance reports showing how often pages appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover. A new control under Settings > Search generative AI lets owners include or exclude their site. Opting out means no traffic from these features, but Google says it does not affect normal rankings. Since 31 August 2026, both are available worldwide.
Technical basics still matter
Make sure important pages are crawlable, keep your XML sitemap up to date and use structured data, HTTPS, clean URLs and hreflang for multilingual sites. Google recommends Core Web Vitals of LCP up to 2.5 seconds, INP up to 200 milliseconds and CLS up to 0.1.
Helpful content wins
Show real expertise, cite sources, update content and make clear who is behind a site. AI tools can help with research, but mass-produced text without added value counts as spam. See our guide to AI tools and our GPT-6 explainer.
Conclusion
Good SEO is also the foundation for GEO. Use the new Search Console reports, watch core updates and invest in content nobody else has. More in our software category.
