End of updates for 24H2 Home and Pro
Microsoft says Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro has reached the end of updates. The October 2026 security update is the final one, with no more monthly security or preview updates after it. Your PC keeps working, but new vulnerabilities will stay open. To check your version, press Windows+R and type winver. The upgrade is offered under Settings > Windows Update. Still on Windows 10? See our article on the extended security updates.
Fixes and security changes
The update fixes Explorer.exe crashing to a black screen in multi-user setups such as Azure Virtual Desktop and FSLogix, AC-3 audio playback, printing with RAW or Generic Text Only drivers after the August update, stuttering mouse input in some games, fingerprint sign-in after a cold boot and Storage Spaces Direct virtual disks that would not come online. It adds a new Manitoba time zone. The Secure Boot certificate rollout continues, auditing for ReFS on external drives is now on by default, and NTLMv1-derived credentials for single sign-on are now blocked by default on some devices, which can affect Wi-Fi, Ethernet and VPN connections that use MS-CHAPv2.
Known issue
On some devices, Smart App Control cannot be turned on after the update if it was off before. Devices where it is already on stay protected. Microsoft documents a registry workaround; back up first.
Who should act
Every Windows 11 user should install the update soon because it closes security holes. Anyone on 24H2 Home or Pro should plan the upgrade to 25H2 or 26H2 right away, since the build numbers show the versions are closely related and the switch is usually quick. Admins should watch the NTLMv1 change and the Explorer fix for virtual desktops.
What to do
Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, install and restart. Gamers may notice the mouse fix; if you are planning new hardware, see our Windows laptops 2026 guide. More in the updates section.
