In short: On 22 July 2026 in London, Samsung unveiled three foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra with an 8-inch inner display and a 200 MP camera, the lighter Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Flip8 flip phone. All three went on sale on 7 August 2026. German prices start at €1,299 (Flip8), €1,999 (Fold8) and €2,199 (Fold8 Ultra). They ship with Android 17 and One UI 9.

What is a foldable?

A foldable is a phone with a flexible screen. Book-style models (Fold) open into a small tablet; flip models (Flip) fold a regular phone in half. Since autumn 2026 Samsung also competes with Apple's iPhone Duo.

The three models

  • Fold8 Ultra: 4.1 mm thin when open, Samsung's thinnest phone so far. Huge screen and strong battery life; reviewers criticise the weaker telephoto and the lack of S Pen support.
  • Fold8: the lighter classic with a 4:3 inner screen, €200 cheaper than the Ultra.
  • Z Flip8: compact at 180 g and 6.1 mm, powered by Samsung's Exynos 2600.

All three are rated IP48, support Quick Share with AirDrop and include Galaxy AI features. Fine dust remains a weak spot of every foldable.

Software and updates

Samsung promises up to seven years of Android and security updates for its current flagships, including the new foldables. One UI 9 adds a PC-style taskbar, drag and drop between apps and up to three apps on screen at once. On the Flip8, many apps such as messengers, maps and the camera now run fully on the cover display.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the Ultra if you want to replace a tablet, the Fold8 if weight matters, and the Flip8 for a compact phone at a lower price. Prices usually drop noticeably within months. More in our Android 17 guide and the Samsung section.
