In short: Google released Android 17 as a stable version on 16 June 2026, starting with Pixel phones from the Pixel 6 onwards. The headline features are floating App Bubbles, Screen Reactions for screen recordings with a selfie video, finer location controls, stronger theft protection and memory limits for apps. Samsung ships Android 17 with One UI 9, Xiaomi with HyperOS 4.
What is Android 17?
Android is Google's mobile operating system and runs on roughly 70 percent of all smartphones. A new major version arrives every year; Android 17 is the 2026 release. Google builds the open core (AOSP), and manufacturers add their own interface on top. That is why Pixel phones always get updates first.
Key new features
- App Bubbles: almost any app can float as a small bubble above other apps and open as a window with one tap.
- Screen Reactions: records the screen and the front camera at the same time, handy for tutorials and reaction videos.
- Location: one-time precise location, a status-bar indicator when an app uses your location, and a dynamic approximate area that depends on population density.
- Contacts Picker: share selected contacts instead of the whole address book.
- Theft protection: removing "Mark as lost" in Find Hub now needs biometric confirmation, and wrong PIN attempts trigger longer lockouts sooner.
- Memory limits: apps that use too much RAM are reined in by the system.
- More: extended dark theme with per-app exclusions, a separate assistant volume, parental controls on all devices and controller remapping. A foldable gaming mode is promised "in the coming months".
Which phones get it?
| Brand | Interface | Status, October 2026 |

| Xiaomi | HyperOS 4 | Android 17 on Xiaomi 17/17 Ultra since July, global HyperOS 4 beta since September |
